Why My Clients Say the Shampoo Bowl Is Their Favorite Part

The shampoo bowl isn't just where I wash your hair...

When most people think about a salon appointment, they think about the end result.

The color.

The haircut.

The blowout.

The before and after photo.

But if you asked many of my clients what they're most excited about before their appointment, they'd probably surprise you.

It's the shampoo bowl.

In fact, many of my returning guests tell me it's the part they've been looking forward to the most.

Not the color.

Not the haircut.

Not even seeing their gray disappear.

The shampoo bowl.

And I think that's because it's never been just a shampoo bowl.

From the moment my guests arrive, I want them to feel cared for.

I start each appointment with a weighted blanket, a consultation face-to-face, and a conversation about what we're going to accomplish together that day.

I want them to know they're seen.

I want them to know they have my attention.

And most importantly, I want them to know they can stop carrying the weight of the day for a little while.

Then we move to the shampoo bowl.

This is where the pace changes.

The world gets quieter.

The phone gets put away.

The to-do list can wait.

For the next few minutes, their only job is to relax.

Before we begin, I make sure they're comfortable. Some guests prefer a neck cushion. Others prefer a folded towel. Either way, I want them settled in before we start.

Then comes one of my favorite parts.

The shampoo.

You may not think much about a shampoo, but I do.

I use the pads of my fingers, never my fingernails. Not only is it more sanitary, but

it allows me to give a thorough scalp massage while still being gentle.

Sometimes we'll begin with Pretreat to remove buildup from the hair and scalp.

Sometimes we'll follow with a scalp scrub.

Better scalp. Better hair.
Better scalp. Better hair.

Both are designed to create a healthier environment for the scalp while helping the hair perform better.

And while I'm working, I'm usually teaching.

Because I believe my clients deserve to know what I'm using and why.

Many times they can't see the product in my hand, but if I explain it while I'm using it, they understand how it benefits their hair and can recreate some of those results at home.

After shampooing, every guest receives a conditioning treatment.

Not because it's an add-on.

Not because it's extra.

Because you're in my chair.

Healthy hair matters.

This is also the moment when I offer an eye mask.

And this is usually where the magic happens.

I tell them, "This is the part where you get to completely relax."

No decisions.

No conversation if they don't want it.

No expectations.

Just rest.

While the conditioner is processing, I use a handheld scalp massager that many of my clients have ended up purchasing for themselves because they love it so much.

The gentle vibration helps release tension and creates an experience that feels less like a salon service and more like a pause button.

And honestly?

I think that's what people are craving.

Not just beautiful hair.

A moment to breathe.

A moment to be cared for.

A moment where someone is focused entirely on them.

In a world that constantly asks us to do more, be more, and move faster, I think there is something powerful about creating a space where someone can simply rest.

So yes, I color hair.

I cut hair.

I style hair.

But what I'm really trying to create is an experience.

One where my guests leave feeling better than when they arrived.

And if the shampoo bowl ends up being their favorite part?

I take that as one of the highest compliments I can receive.
