I Really Just Enjoy Hot Coffee

A couple Sundays ago at church, the question was simple:

What’s something you really enjoy?”

Not something impressive.

Not something deep and spiritual.

Just something you enjoy.

And without overthinking it, I said, “Hot coffee.”

I really do. I just enjoy hot coffee.

Hot coffee: rare, scared, and worth protecting.
Hot coffee: rare, scared, and worth protecting.

This morning I woke up at 5:30.

I went to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, and headed straight to the kitchen. I

made my coffee. I turned on the oven so I could start Everly’s breakfast. I packed her lunch. I picked out her clothes. I woke her up. I got her dressed.

Somewhere in between all of that, I made my own oatmeal.

And let me tell you something.

I never got to drink my coffee.

And I never got to eat my oatmeal.

Because as soon as I sat down, it was time to take her to school.

When I got back home, my coffee wasn’t hot anymore.

It wasn’t cozy.

It wasn’t comforting.

It wasn’t the thing I said I “really enjoy.”

It was room temperature.

Basically, iced coffee… but not on purpose.

And that’s when it hit me.

This is why moms love hot coffee so much.

It’s not about caffeine.

It’s about finishing something warm before it gets cold.

It’s about a moment that doesn’t get interrupted.

It’s about sitting down without someone calling your name from another room.

And I know the women who sit in my chair live this exact same morning.

You’re up early.

You’re making lunches.

Switching laundry.

Answering emails before the day officially starts.

Getting everyone else ready before you even think about yourself.

You go to work because you have to.

You take care of everyone because that’s who you are.

And somewhere in all of that… your coffee gets cold.

Not because it didn’t matter.

But because everyone else mattered first in that moment.

So, when I say I enjoy hot coffee, what I really mean is this:

I enjoy having five minutes that stay mine.

And honestly, that’s what I see happen in my salon every week.

Women sit in my chair and their shoulders drop.

They exhale.

They aren’t needed for a little while.

No one is asking where the socks are.

No one needs a snack packed.

No one is waiting on a reply.

They just get to sit.

They get to feel taken care of.

They get to enjoy something all the way through.

Maybe what we really enjoy tells us what we’re missing more often than we realize.

So now I’m curious.

What’s something you really enjoy?

And when was the last time you got to enjoy it while it was still hot?

If you haven’t had a hot cup of coffee in a while, my chair is open.
